Trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

Irene is a trainee therapist on clinical placement at The Turner Centre. As part of her second year of training on the MA in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Essex, she offers low-cost counselling with us. Her approach to therapy is principally psychodynamic, but her outlook is also informed by her doctoral training in existential philosophy and her experience working as a lecturer in philosophy since 2006. Her academic research has focused on questions of self-becoming and human flourishing, with a particular interest in how our relationships with others can help – or hinder – these projects. Irene is keen to help clients come to a better understanding of how past experiences may be influencing their current difficulties, whether they’re facing anxiety, mood-related struggles, or simply wanting change. She believes counselling can be a powerful tool for achieving greater self-awareness and a more fulfilling mode of engaging with the world.

Irene is a student member of the BACP (listed under her first name, Sheila) and will complete her MA in 2026.
